"One-man project Elintseeker, alias of Fuzz Lee, has graced Singapore’s shores with his tranquil, ambient meanderings for many years. His latest offering, Gerwalk Modes, reassembled from hours of discarded recordings, doesn’t deviate too far from his trademark guitar-based sound. Dreamy, warm shimmers of drone are heard on much of the album, sometimes tastefully ornamented by chamber wind instruments.
What differentiates Gerwalk Modes from his earlier work is a more liberal use of electronics and a warmer timbre, purportedly inspired by 80s pop and the fond childhood memories associated with them. The result is an expansion of Elintseeker’s sonic palette — electronic-laced shoegaze overtones feature on ‘Living in City 7’, while whispered vocals and synthesiser-caked textures drive ‘Nome’ and ‘Defolding to Frontier’. Guitar plays a major role in most of these pieces, and perhaps it’s the use of guest contributions responsible for the variation in this. Here we have the soft sung vocals of Ferri and others (reminding me, along with the ambient guitars, of Durutti Column), flutes or rhythm programming to make the difference in these pieces. "Though it's not without flaws (dated album graphics, for one), Gerwalk Modes is nonetheless a credible follow-up to Fuzz Lee's 2015 Elintseeker opus Geography of the Heart. Lee's characterized the new set as an “accident album” for the fact that though the base material for the project involved random ideas intended to be used for a live performance art and sculpture event, none of the material ended up being used for its intended purpose. The Singapore-based artist thereafter created the forty-eight-minute release by shaping improvised guitar loops, phrases, and drones into eleven atmospheric settings. With a large number of guest musicians taking part, the project implicitly revels in the spirit of communal music-making, even if Lee, credited with guitars (acoustic and electric), lyre, electronics, synthesizer, and vocals, is perfectly capable of operating as your prototypical one-man band.

The opening “Vermillion Team” exemplifies the album's most appealing dimension, its focus on luscious soundscapes woven from electric guitar and synthesizer textures, the latter provided by Mark Kuykendall (The New Honey Shade). As appealing is the slow-motion dreamscape “Saras's Island,” which pairs reverberant guitar washes and tremolo effects with flute entrancement by Stelios Romaliadis (Lüüp). In both cases, Lee's beguiling meditations are so serenading, they verge on New Age, but in no way objectionably. An electronica dimension emerges within other songs, “Living In City 7” a case in point, with Daisuke Tanabe contributing programming to warmly melodic material rich in synthesizer textures.

One of the two tracks featuring lead vocals, “Nome” suggests Lee might be better to focus exclusively on instrumentals or perhaps use someone with a better set of pipes; the backing vocals by Ferri aka Rena Morizono are fine, by the way, though they don't wholly compensate for the weak lead. “The Megaroad Song,” on the other hand, is much more effective, perhaps because the song's fuzz-smeared, shoegaze ballad style suits his vocally delivery better and because the song itself is so melodically endearing.

Still, the album's most satisfying settings are the instrumentals, whether it be the peaceful, guitars-heavy reverie “Riviera Resort,” featuring Alexius Cai (Piblokto) on acoustic and Jason Shanley (Cinchel) on electric, or “Send Out the Cat's Eye,” which augments synthesizer washes with blues-flavoured electric guitar musings by Lee. Without question, the inclusion of lead vocals does add variety to what would otherwise be an all-instrumental affair, but including them can have an adverse effect when the singing's sub-par, as it is in at least one case here." - Textura

[ F U Z Z L E E ( e li n t se e k e r ) に よ る 本 作 の 解 説 文 ] 2015 年に完成したアルバム「Geography Of The Heart」をリリース後、 半年間は休養を取るため、楽器に触れることや楽曲制作から距離を置くはずだった。しかし、シンガポール人アーティスト、ジュー・チュンリン(Joo Choon Lin)からアー トフェスティバルで公演される彫刻的なパフォーマンスアート作品用の音楽伴奏の依頼が来たために距離を置けなくなってしまった。 しかし、依頼された時点ではアーティストの彫刻的なパフォーマンスアート作品の概要がまだ決定されていなかったため、どのような楽曲制作にしていくか進める事が 出来なかった。そこで思いついたのが、事前準備や練習としてテレビ映像に合わせて即興演奏を始めることだった。四週間以上に渡り、お気に入りのアニメ映像を流し ながら、ひたすら即興演奏を繰り返し、それらの音を録り続けた。その結果、レコーディングされた音楽が数時間にも及んだ。ようやく、アーティストから概要が知らされ、 準備のための演奏作業にも終止符を打つことになり、これらの録音された音楽は、数ヶ月後にパソコンの中身を整理するまでの間、手を付ける事もなく忘れ去られたま まであった。忘れていた音楽ファイルをもう一度聴き返すと、楽曲のリアレンジや再構築するアイディアが色々と浮上し、新たなアルバムを作る事を決意することになっ た。但し、今回は制作過程においてテーマを決めずに、ひたすら楽しく音楽制作をすることにした。
「Gerwalk Modes」は偶発的に出来たアルバムである。ここにある音の素材は、パフォーマンスアートイベントのために音楽制作をするにあたり、準備段階で色々なアイディ アを引き出すための即興演奏を録り溜めていたものである。結局、これらの音源は一切使用されなかったものである。当アルバムの音楽の核となる部分には、ギタールー プの即興演奏、ドローン、数時間以上レコーディングされた中からの音楽フレーズや旋律、リアレンジや新しい想像が顕在し、雰囲気のある楽曲や歌曲が生まれた。また、 音楽制作を楽しむ心、コラボレーションの美しさ、80 年代アニメのサントラや効果音、ナチュラルでドリーミーな音楽、80 年代ポップスへの愛情、子供時代から現在 に至るまで変わらずに好きであり続けるモノを謳った作品となっている。今回のアルバム制作に協力してくれたゲスト・ミュージシャンは、管楽器演奏に Stelios Romaliadis (Lüüp) と Andy Chia (SA Trio) 、シンセサイザーに Eswandy Sarip、Tim Martin (Maps and Diagrams) と Mark Kuykendall (The New Honey Shade)、ギター に Jason Shanley (Cinchel) と Alexius Cai (Piblokto) 、プログラミングに Daisuke Tanabe、ピアノとボーカルに Ferri、そしてドラム、ベース、プログラミング担当に Victor Low (Affixen) を迎えた。

elintseeker はシンガポール在住ファズ・リー(Fuzz Lee)によるソロプロジェクト。楽曲構成、サ ウンドデザイン、音の静寂、即興的なギター奏法、音響操作、グリッチノイズ、フィールドレコー ディング等により、自身の日常生活における様々な感情を表現しており、まるで小さな一筆で絵画 を制作する画家のように楽曲が制作されている。2011 年より世界中のレーベルからリリース、中 でも PLOP/NATURE BLISS より 2015 年に発売された「Geography of the Heart」は、米人気ウ ェブジン Silent Ballet の 2015 年のトップアルバムリストに選出される。elintseeker としての活動 以外にも、シンガポールの著名ミュージシャン Zai Kuning, Shark Fung らとの即興トリオ Amino Acid Orchestra を始め、もう1つの自己名義 Faures や、tri-continental trio のメンバーとしても活動。 さらにアートインスタレーションなどにも楽曲を提供している。
